⁷ Now return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet,^(A) and he will pray for you^(B) and you will live. But if you do not return her, you may be sure that you and all who belong to you will die.”^(C)

¹¹ So Abimelek gave orders to all the people: “Anyone who harms^(A) this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”^(B)

²⁴ About three months later Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar is guilty of prostitution, and as a result she is now pregnant.”

Judah said, “Bring her out and have her burned to death!”^(A)

Social Responsibility

¹⁶ “If a man seduces a virgin^(A) who is not pledged to be married and sleeps with her, he must pay the bride-price,^(B) and she shall be his wife.

¹⁷ If her father absolutely refuses to give her to him, he must still pay the bride-price for virgins.

²⁰ “‘If a man sleeps with a female slave who is promised to another man^(A) but who has not been ransomed or given her freedom, there must be due punishment.^[a] Yet they are not to be put to death, because she had not been freed. ²¹ The man, however, must bring a ram to the entrance to the tent of meeting for a guilt offering to the Lord.^{(B) 22} With the ram of the guilt offering the priest is to make atonement for him before the Lord for the sin he has committed, and his sin will be forgiven.^(C)
